Stress Management
AARGH!!!! the sound of stress! Stress is triggered by any event disturbing
your physical, mental, or emotional well being. It is your body's adaptive
"flight or fight" response to the events it perceives as disturbing or
threatening to your safety or well being.
Whenever this stress response kicks in, your blood rushes into your
muscles, adrenaline is pumped into your blood, and your heart rate, respiration
rate, and blood pressure increase. You're STRESSED!
Humans evolved the stress response to fight off wild animals. Today,
stress is the "wild animal". Untamed and allowed to run rampant in your life,
"bad" stress can kill you. Yet not all stress is bad: "good" stress is an
essential part of successful living.
"Good Stress" is a balance between excitement and relaxation that can
help you concentrate, focus, and achieve what you want. Good stress helps you
become centered, clear, and ready for action. Long term, good stress releases
energy and helps you to do what you must.
"Bad Stress" is a never ending, constant arousal and anxiety. Too much
stress experienced too often causes your body to react with heart palpitations,
sweating, stomach acidity, muscle spasms, and high blood pressure. Long term,
bad stress can cause irreparable damage to your physical, mental, and emotional
health and well being.
Stress of both kinds is caused both by your "interpretations of" and
"responses to" situations going on "outside" and "inside" you. Notice that
it is YOUR interpretations and YOUR responses which cause your stress. It is
not the situations which cause stress but how you deal or do not deal with
them that triggers the stress response.
For example, take this famous "Paradigm Story" and see how you would
react. You are a man in a fast, hot, blood red sports car. You are driving
a million miles an hour along beautiful, winding roads in Italy. You see a
woman in a car coming in the other direction where the road curves around a
mountain. Her car is swerving from side to side. She is screaming "Pig!
Pig!" as she nearly slams into you.
How do you interpret what she is saying and how do you decide what
is happening here? Do you assume she is being chased by police and
is trying to alert you? Do you assume she is making unkind value judgments
about your hot car and the kind of man who drives it? Do you think she is
a seriously deranged woman who needs your help?
So what is your response to the situation? Do you slow down because
the police are just around the bend? Do you flip her the finger and call her
a "Cow!" before speeding up? Do you pull over, look for her license
plate number, and then call the police for help?
Remember this is all happening in a matter of seconds... and stress
is often "caused" by time pressure. So think quickly! In the "Paradigm
Story" , the man chooses the less evolved response. He screams "Cow!" and
speeds up around the bend... only to slam into a real, live pig that the woman
had just narrowly avoided hitting. Bad STRESS, bad karma, a banged up car,
and instant bacon are the result!
As this story shows, stress is all in how you interpret and react
to events. Interpreting them positively and reacting to them with love is
what invokes the "good stress" response and keeps "bad" stress away. As
with everything else in life, the choice is yours!
Financial karma is a constant reality in the physical world. Whether it
is the ripple effect from world events like 9/11 or war, stock market downturns,
or corporate downsizing, external financial "problems" will always be a part
of life. There are a number of things you can do to alleviate financial
stress in your mind and to lessen the impact of financial karma in your life.
Create a Cushion Before Disaster Strikes. Remember that every
bit of money you save is one more bit of security for your future. The best
way to alleviate financial stress is to take steps when you are not financially
stressed to prepare for it. If you have a cushion to fall back on, the fall
in your finances will be much easier to bear.
Focus on the Presence of Money in Your Future.
What creates
the most financial stress is you focusing on the ABSENCE of money in your
future. Remember that what you focus on you create more of for yourself.
If you want more money in your life, you must focus on it's PRESENCE for
you in the future. That is why many people stay unemployed for so long,
they focus on what they do not want - the LACK of a job - instead of what
they do want - GETTING a job.
If Disaster Strikes: Act Immediately.
If you are laid off,
you have no time for shock and disbelief. Rather you need to take action
right away. First, take advantage of unemployment benefits. Next, notify
your contacts and employment services that you are looking for a new situation.
Being laid off does carry not the stigma it once did.
If Disaster Strikes: Plan Immediately.
Bring your family
together and be honest about the situation. Your spouse and your children
will quickly figure out that you are having problems. Leaving them out of
a discussion only increases their anxiety. Discussing it makes them partners
in your survival and helps everyone to cope with disaster.
If Disaster Strikes: Prioritize Immediately.
Part of coping
with disaster is prioritizing future spending. Allowing your family to help
you decide what are essentials and what are extras gives you a better chance
of reducing your spending in a disaster scenario. It also gives your family
a greater sense of control in the situation.
If Disaster Strikes: Take Care of Yourself.
Good health is
often the first casualty of financial stress. This only ups the overall
stress level and robs you of the endurance and energy you need to deal with
your problems effectively. Remember to eat well, get enough sleep, and do
free exercise like walking or running.
If Disaster Strikes: Maintain Your Routines.
Money is not
the only thing in your life. Sticking to routines like sharing family meals,
expecting children to continue to do well in school, keeping up their
participation in sports, community activities, etc, gives the family a sense
of stability which is very reassuring to children.
If Disaster Strikes: Be Active and Proactive.
Those who take
active steps to meet disaster always do a better job in overcoming it. Ask
yourself, "What can I do today, right now, to improve my situation?" and then
just do it. Stay focused on your goal of "getting back on track" with your
financial life. "Don't worry, be active!"
If Disaster Strikes: Ask for Help.
Believe it or not, most
people will want to help you when you are in genuine need. Yet you cannot
get the help you need, if you do not ASK for it. Part of asking for help
from others is asking for emotional support: talking to others may not change
your financial situation but it does help you to feel better... that will put
you in a better place to deal with finances.
If Disaster Strikes: Take It One Day at a Time.
The biggest
mistake people make when disaster strikes is to start out with a flurry of
activity, get frustrated, and then quit. No matter how much you would like
to solve your problems all at once, you will not be able to do so. It is
better to take action every day, one day at a time, day after day, toward
your goal of alleviating financial stress by manifesting more money in your
life... and it will be so.
"Performance Anxiety" is not just experienced on stage or in concert halls
by actors and musicians... it is a top ranking cause of stress in the sexual
aspect of intimate relationships.
Since men by their nature have a more active role in sex, much of
the attention focuses on Male Performance Anxiety. Yet women have it as
well even though less performance is "biologically required".
"Male Performance Anxiety" usually centers around the "mechanical"
performance of the sex act. In other words, men become concerned about
controlling the functioning of their sexual organs in a manner that is
pleasing both to themselves and their partners.
"Female Performance Anxiety" usually centers around the "emotional"
aspect of the sex act. In other words, women become concerned about
their ability to stimulate the desire of their partner in a manner that
will promote emotional closeness between them.
For both men and women, performance anxiety is caused by focusing
attention on an "undesirable" result. Since it is the nature of creation
to manifest what is focused on with passion and intensity, putting attention
on avoiding a bad result actually creates it.
You can go a long way to alleviating your partner's performance a
nxiety by focusing instead on the pleasures of stimulating them and being
stimulated in return. Stimulation is pleasurable and desirable in and of
itself even if it does not lead to orgasm each time. Kissing, caressing,
holding, romantic talking create the sexual stimulation men seek and the
emotional intimacy women desire.
Focusing on stimulation versus orgasm during sexual intimacy drains
the stress out of the situation. It actually promotes orgasm because it
allows orgasm to occur naturally (hint: that is where the best ones come
from). Focusing on stimulation puts your attention on the pleasure of sex
which gets you focused on the desirable result that you both want: a mutually
satisfying sexual encounter.
So take the pressure off one another by releasing your expectations
of what should result from sexual intimacy.
For men this means being OK with not having a "touch down" every
time. It does not make you less of a man if you do not "score" every time...
scores are for sporting events and not for sexual intimacy.
For women this means being OK with your man not "touching down"
every time. It does not make you less of a woman if you do not "get him to
score"... besides women usually like cuddling better anyway... and that
always works no matter what!
Remember that when you are "in the bedroom", you are not in a concert
hall or a sporting arena where performances are expected and lack of the same
is sure to result in boos. The bedroom should be a safe and loving
sanctuary when there is only peace, harmony, and above all, understanding and
compassion between partners.
RELAX! The good news is that you can manage your stress. All it takes are
two simple steps.
ONE, Identify whatever it is that is causing your stress
response to be triggered. TWO, Pick and use the stress reduction techniques
that work best for you.
Identifying your stress is easy. Just become aware of your body as
you respond to different situations that you encounter in life. Then ask
yourself, "Does this situation, event, person, place, or thing…"
Make my muscles tense? Make my heart pound?
Make my hands cold/clammy? Give me a headache?
Give me a backache? Give me a knot in the stomach?
This month's featured page offers a variety of stress management
techniques that are tried-and-true. So relax and feel no guilt if you are
not able to follow a single one of these suggestions!
If you want to avoid the stress of picking a technique, here are
two that are quick and easy:
The EASY technique is just making a concerted effort to avoid
whatever it is that is stressing you.
The QUICK technique is to smile and laugh - it is hard to be happy
and stressed at the same time.
When using stress reduction techniques, remember two things: Your
first goal is to learn how to lessen the impact of stress whenever you feel
tense. Your last goal is to learn how to replace the stress response with
the relaxation response. (That's it!)
From MS NBC News: "A new drug is improving the lives of patients with the
sleeping disorder Narcolepsy, but not without... controversy. (The drug)
Xyrem contains GHB, also known as the date rape drug. (It helps alleviate)
a common symptom of Narcolepsy... called Cataplexy. It's a sudden loss of
muscle control that can be triggered by extreme emotions... (like) too
much stress."
"The drug improves nighttime sleep and reduces episodes of Cataplexy.
Dr. Mark Goetting, a sleep specialist, says that as a bonus, Xyrem also tends
to dramatically improve the alertness during the day and prevent sleep attacks.
It's the short-term effects that make it such a viable date rape drug. Xyrem
is a salty liquid that can go unnoticed in a mixed drink. A victim drinks it,
falls in a deep sleep for a short period of time, wakes up and remembers nothing."
"Plenty of safeguards are in place to make sure Xyrem doesn't fall
into the wrong hands. Unlike any other (prescription) drug, Xyrem can only be
dispensed from one pharmacy in the entire country, located in St. Louis,
Missouri." Safeguards? Let's stop the insanity.
Narcolepsy sufferers, read my words, learn to manage your stress and
learn to deal with your emotions... do NOT medicate them away. That only
DELAYS the problem... it does not SOLVE it! Eventually your body will get
used to Xyrem and your attacks will be back!!
The spiritual purpose of
Narcolepsy is for you to develop beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors to cope
with stress and emotions. Handle your stress and face your emotions and
your Narcolepsy will vanish!
"Tracy Flick... I've seen a lot of overambitious students in my years of
teaching who've come and gone, but Tracy Flick was special..."
"Election" is the story of Jim McAllister, a civics teacher, who
literally cannot handle the stress of his life - both personal and
professional - that reaches it's peak during the time of a student election.
McAllister is passionate about teaching and cares deeply for the
welfare of his students. When Tracy Flick, an ambitious overachiever with
superior academic performance and too many extracurricular activities,
runs unopposed for next year's Class President, "Mr. M" decides to intervene.
He recruits the wildly popular Paul Metzler to run for President, much
to the annoyance of Tracy Flick.
Paul is an award winning jock whose broken leg has left him unable
to pursue dreams of a sports career. His good nature, charm, and wide
ranging appeal make him a serious contender for the job. As the campaign
intensifies, "Mr. M" finds himself increasingly drawn into a series of
situations where his own ethics are put to the test.
Meanwhile, the stress of his personal life intensifies. His wife,
who is desperate to have a baby, puts him through the most horrific scene
of "Male Performance Anxiety" ever filmed. Stressed, Jim drifts into an
affair with the wife of his next door neighbor.
On the day of the election, his wife discovers his affair and decides
to end their marriage. Wanting something in his life to turn out right,
McAllister "throws away" votes for Tracy so that Paul can win. Yet he is
caught in the act and immediately forced to resign his position.
When the story hits the newspapers, it is the type of "human
interest" piece that gains worldwide attention, forcing the three time
award winning "Best Teacher" out of that profession for good.
When you watch "Election", notice how time and again "Mr. M" gets
rattled by stress into making the wrong decisions. His is a cautionary tale
about how NOT to handle the stresses of life!

Inspirational Quote for the Month:
"Stress is the natural conflict between the emotion's desire to 'kill'
someone, the mind's realization that 'killing is bad', and the body's
keeping all that 'bottled up inside!'" (Anonymous)

the night I live another life." (lyrics from a popular song)
